Two things surprise people about this table. First, the jump from a domestic machine is large — and justified, as we’ll explain. What actually drives the price

1. Capacity — but not linearly

Price rises with drum size, but not in a straight line. A 20 kg machine does not cost twice a 10 kg machine, which is why bigger machines usually win on cost per kilogram washed. The right question is rarely “what’s the cheapest machine?” but “what mix of sizes washes my daily load with the fewest labour hours?” — a calculation we run for every laundry we plan.

2. Hard-mount vs soft-mount

A hard-mount (rigid) machine bolts to a concrete plinth and spins at moderate extraction speeds. A soft-mount (suspended) machine has internal suspension, reaches much higher G-force extraction, and can be installed on suspended floors and upper storeys without a massive plinth. Soft-mount machines typically cost more than the equivalent hard-mount — but they spin more water out, so drying is faster and cheaper every single load for the life of the machine. On sites where the plinth itself would be expensive (or impossible), soft-mount can be the cheaper total.

3. Controls and connectivity

Entry-level controls run fixed programs. Does country of origin matter? Europe vs Asia

Where a machine is built moves the price more than almost anything else on this page, and it deserves a straight answer. For decades the rule of thumb was simple: European-built machines were the premium choice, and everything else was a compromise. That is no longer the whole story. The best Asian factories now build heavy-duty commercial machines to specifications that stand alongside the European marques — with a very different price tag.

A concrete example at the big end of the market: a 100 kg washer extractor from a European brand typically sells in Australia in the range of $80,000 to $110,000. So why would anyone pay the difference? Sometimes there are good reasons: a particular European machine may carry a specific feature, control system or heritage the buyer wants, and European brands have long resale familiarity. But for most commercial laundries the questions that actually decide whether a machine is a good buy are not about the flag on the box: What is the frame, bearing and motor duty rating? Are parts stocked in Australia? Who services it, and how quickly? What does the warranty really cover? A premium machine is only premium if it is supported.
